Leather Fashion Design is a practical, how-to book about making garments from leather, suede and similar materials. It covers everything from what to look for in choosing a skin to work with, through pattern-cutting, sewing techniques and finishing. The final chapter includes working with ‘leather-like’ materials including ultrasuede and faux patent leather.
The book starts with a showcase of leather apparel spanning time, but concentrating on the twentieth century. Beautifully illustrated with examples of leather apparel at its finest as well as clear step-by-step illustrations of how to make various types of garment, and a comprehensive resources section listing relevant organizations, publications and other information, this book will be invaluable for both students and professionals.

Francesca Sterlacci has created the “everything you wanted to know about designing with leather” reference book. From leather fashion history to a complete list of skins and their characteristics, this book is a MUST HAVE for every serious designer. Written by a designer who dedicated a major portion of her collection to leather, Francesca is not only an authority on the subject but has taken the technical aspects of leathercraft and put them in layman’s terms. The step-by-step construction techniques chapters demystify the process while the faux leather chapter provides valuable information. My design students and industry associates love this book.
Caroline Simonelli, Parsons The New School for Design, New York
Leather design requires a special understanding and knowledge, generally not taught in fashion schools or known or understood by sportswear designers; this book acts as the conduit for that knowledge, from one specialist to students and professional designers alike.
Sass Brown, Resident Director - FIT in Florence
Leather Fashion Design is THE industry standard on understanding leather fashion design. From a historical perspective to leather’s current role in society this book inspires as well as educates. Designers and industry professionals finally have a book that speaks to the technical side of the leather tanning process as well as garment design and construction. Francesca Sterlacci is not only an expert in the field of leather design but created the world’s first comprehensive leather design program at FIT. This book is a must for any one interested in fashion.
